Cycad Pams
Many species, but mainly the sago palm and fern palm/false
sago palm. In my experience this is the more common plant toxicity seen at
Northshore Animal Hospital. It is also a commonly used plant in
landscaping for some of the newer subdivision in Mandeville. The toxin is
present in all parts of the plant but highest in the seeds. Ingestion of
1-2 seeds can cause several clinical signs and death. Initial symptoms are
vomiting, hypersalivation, excessive drinking. After a few days the
symptoms worsen and eventually lead to death. Prognosis is poor once liver
death has occurred. |
